It's the season of change as one of the JSpo announcers is moving on to other things! Not that I know what her name is and where she's going but OK.

Here we go!
The SASUKE All-Stars were at Muscle Park!
The All-Stars are heroes! We see their trials and tribulations over the years.
OF COURSE we get the Yamada crying clip.
And Nagano finishing the course. And the dip!
Namonakiasuri-to!
And here we are at SASUKE Fall 2008! The SASUKE Trial Qualifiers! I told you they were pushing them as a type of successor group to the All-Stars.
There was much crying that day.
SASUKE Mania! Final!
We see a recap of the SASUKE Trial for 21. From 80 to 33! From 33 to 8! Casey Cummings! We see the people who didn't make it. And the gradual movement downwards the stage of some of the competitors.
If SASUKE is going to develop new All-Stars, these guys are the ones that "fit" the profile.
Ishimaru drops wisdom! Kubota Takayuki! He slips on the Half-Pipe Attack! It would start a chain reaction that would take out all the Trial Qualifiers.
Hashimoto Koji cleared the Half-Pipe Attack but is conquered by the Soritatsu-Kabe.
And Murakami! Does the same!
Sato Jun! He's 16! He's an extreme sportsman! Unfortunately, he doesn't get all the way across for the Log Grip.
Asa Kazuma! We see a bit more of this run. He cleared the Half-Pipe Attack (iikanji says an All-Star) with no problem but times out on the Soritatsu-Kabe.
And then only three were left! Had any one of the STQers made it to the 2nd Stage it would have made for a great story but...
Matachi Ryo! He gets a bit farther than the others as he got past the Soritatsu Kabe only to fall reaching for the rope ladder to the platform on the Flying Chute.
Kawaguchi Tomohiro! He trains with his wife watching on! His wife is nervous! Oy vey man, don't talk about the button just yet!
Shingo thinks he can do it!
And then...Kawaguchi can't keep his balance after the Half-Pipe Attack. Tsugi challenge shimasu says the wife!
And of course the last was Miyagi Takuya, Mr. SASUKE's Assassin.
Mr. SASUKE dispenses a bit of advice at the end but...
He hit the Jumping Spider wrong and that was it for the STQers.
We then see them apologize for their collective failure. Tears are shed. They want to try again! Together!
Bunpei Shiratori!
A brief history of Bunpei! He made it to the Final Stage. And of course the classic comeback after getting put down by the heat.
But like the other All-Stars, he had problems after 17. And then he was too injured to participate.
Lee Yen Chi! Brian Orosco! They were the first to make it to the 2nd Stage!
Then Shingo fell! Shinji Kobayashi sighting!
Let's look at Bunpei's run again! It seemed like a struggle for him but he did it! It was a triumphant comeback!
And there were many smiles by the All-Stars!
Three made it to the 3rd Stage! We will see them next!

As it was hinted to at the top of this liveblog, tonight is the last episode of SASUKE Maniac! Why? Some will invariably point to the low rating SASUKE 21 got, a 12.2 in the Kantou area. SASUKE 20 got a rating of 14.4 which was the lowest rated SASUKE ever until, well, 21. In both cases, SASUKE ran against a Quiz Hexagon special. Quiz Hexagon is one of the most popular shows on TV right now so the decision to try to run 21 against it even after they got creamed during 20 is bizzare. Why not try to switch it with DOORS? A Sunday SASUKE might draw a bit better than doggedly sticking to Wednesdays. In any case, we don't have the full story about everything yet. For the time being though, SASUKE will recede to the background until next year.
Note: SASUKE Maniac was and has only ever been a Kanto area show. It was never broadcast on any other TBS affiliate across the country.

Last week! There was this program on TBS called SASUKE! You might have heard of it. It was pretty nifty!
This week! Why waste time with filming new footage when TBS probably has reams of the stuff laying on the floor? Yes, let's see what got cut out of the main show! It's SASUKE Maniac!
Let's start with Takeda and the Shin-Cliff Hanger! Nagano and the Spider Flip! Levi doing his flip! Miyazaki and the first stage!

It's Moeyan! And Hiroshi Yamamoto!
Some unidentified people fail! Moeyan and Hiroshi Yamamoto discuss strategy.
Let's look at Hiroshi training. He has a boxing license, y'know. The other members of Robert ロバート and Wakky talking about his chances.
84. Hiroshi Yamamoto! 山本博! Steps. OK! Log Grip. He gets ready. Some problems with the "clinch." Here he goes! AND NO! After all that, his day is finished. Guess boxing doesn't help you hold a giant piece of wood.
Dante! He's extremely nervous! He appeared on the last Sportsman No. 1. He went in-door rock climbing to prepare himself for this day. He touches fists with Nakata Daisuke and shares words with Levi.

JFA Free Climbing Champion Onoue Aya 尾上彩! She's 12! Steps. Yes! Log Grip coming up. YES! Oh wow. Pole Maze. NO! She couldn't get it to move. Stuck on the pole. She tries to go back to the platform but NO! She falls in!

SASUKE MANIAC September 14, 2008 Sort of liveblog サスケマニア
We're back!
Well, what can Monster 9 and TBS show us after SASUKE Navi from this afternoon?
Here we go!
And they start with what I will dub the "Famous" commercial.
Looks like they're focusing on the famous people again.
Let's start with some SASUKE Matsur! It's fun and..pain and water for the whole family!
Let's forget those random people and move on to the main event!
Tomohiro Matsunaga! He won a silver medal at the Beijing Olympics. And the man who beat him, Henry Cejudo is there just too! Just to rub it in that Matsunaga is a loser apparently.
We see Daisuke Miyazaki and his balling posse. Wait, what?
We relive Miyazaki's run at 20. And then we relive his visit to Muscle Park.
Can you imagine what the coverage would be like if the national had made it to the Olympics?
You'd think that Matsunaga would get more coverage but actually, the women's wrestling team got more attention with Saori Yoshida dominating her division and Kyoko Hamaguchi's dad being all famous and stuff.
So far this episode is like the digest version of SASUKE Navi. Expect masked wrestlers and unknown university students to appear soon.
The Muscle Musical boys! Hiromitsu Takahashi gets his boys all riled up!
And we get a quick run down of all the celebrities who are going to appear - Hiromichi Sato, Wakky, Higedanshaku, Dante, Hiroshi Yamamoto, Moeyan. Did I miss anyone? Whatever.
It's All-Stars time! Bunpei gets a bit more airtime since he's making his return to the show.
The SASUKE staff went to visit him back in May. Back then he figures that if he thinks he's OK he'll do it.
They go back to him in July. Finally, they apparently stalk him at his home in the evening as he is training in August. He takes a couple of attempts but gets up his homemade Soritatsu Kabe. And he does his homemade Shin-Cliff Hanger.
Bunpei: The Return! Look for it in stores this October.
Let's go to Toshihiro Takeda as he looks atporn poetry on his laptop again.
We take a look at his run at 20 when he timed out on the very last obstacle of the 1st Stage.
I think his was the most surprising of the runs during 20. Yamada is Yamada and Yamamoto is prone to what the Japanese call a "careless miss" at times so Takeda having problems with the 1st Stage is slightly bewildering.
We go back to Kagoshima to invade Makoto Nagano's privacy. The way the world has built him up (both fans in Japan and the US treat him like he's some kind of god) it's wonder that there isn't a bunch of children running along with him and housewives waving to him from the clifftops.
We look at his problems with the 2nd Stage from the last time.
There's Levi! OK. He seems a little bit more smarmy this time. That's weird. I never notice that before.
Oy, there was an earthquake in Iwate just now. M4. 1 I believe.
TBS builds up The Legend of Levi, a TV special coming to you this December.
And we get to see the videos of the other ANC winners. But only after this break!
I'm used to weird commercials but a blue gorilla singing in an ad for coffee is pretty up there.
Luci wants to show that women can do the course!
Mark Whitmer can do lots of stuff! He's excited!

This week! SASUKE Trial Summer 2008! サスケトライアル2008夏!
It's the Final Stage! There are only eight slots to the big show! The final 12 competitors will try to muscle their way onto the Stage of SASUKE Hopes and Dreams. To earn a place to sit on one of the Chairs of SASUKE Trial Success and Future Glory! To put their numbers on the Boards of..OK, I'll stop now.

Don't forget, the Final Stage goes like this: 4 Hurdles (4連ハードル), Rope Cling (ロープクリング), Jump Ring (ジャンプリング), Shinzou Yaburi no Saka - literally the Heart Break Hill (心臓破りの坂), Danchigaubou - Uneven Poles (段違棒), Power Hanger (パワーハンガー), Final Ladder (ファイナルラダー).

Highlights from last week. We learned that under 55 seconds is the the minimum you need to make it to the stage.
Whoops, missed the name. Rope Cling. Jump Ring. Hill. He's a bit behind the split. Logs. NO! Majika yo! He slips into the water!
Super koukousei! Satou Jun! UH OH. WARN THE G4 FORUMS. HE'S FREE RUNNING! And right on cue there's the clip of Levi (hits) Meeuwenberg from 20. Can he do it!
He's 16! Satou Jun! Hurdles. Rope Cling. Hayai! Jump Ring. Hill. Time is ahead of the split. Logs. No problem. Power Hanger. Final Ladder. And...48"72! he's the new number two! See ya Azuma. Nice knowing you. Takami, the other 16 year old is the new number 8 and on the chopping block.
Next is a university student whose name I missed again. Hurdles. Rope Cling. Final Ring. No problems but he's behind the split. Logs. NO! All for naught as he falls into the water.

The remaining fellows are getting more and more nervous.
Asa looks more and more nervous which is weird since he's the safest at this point.
Matachi Ryo! He has lots of pictures. He must go to the events. He doesn't know what he would do if SASUKE finished, In his room he has some stuff he put together to help him train. Ahh. It's a Cliff Hanger.
Why do they keep showing Asa being nervous? Isn't he the safest at this point?

Well, it looks like Mr. SASUKE's Assassin will at least make it to the Power Hanger. And Mr. SASUKE will be there! That's not a good sign though.

Last week! Um. I heard something about the final stage of the SASUKE Trials!
This week! More SASUKE Trials! It's the Final Stage! Who will survive?
The Final Stage goes like this: 4 Hurdles (4連ハードル), Rope Cling (ロープクリング), Jump Ring (ジャンプリング), Shinzou Yaburi no Saka - literally the Heart Break Hill (心臓破りの坂), Danchigaubou - Uneven Poles (段違棒), Power Hanger (パワーハンガー), Final Ladder (ファイナルラダー).
The best eight will go on to the big show! At the end of last week, Kazuma Asa 朝一眞 was at the head of the class! Will he get moved out of his seat? Will Casey Cummings ケーシー・カミングス airplane his way to SASUKE 21? It's SASUKE Maniac!

Hashimoto Koji 橋本亘司 is a sports instructor!
Under one minute is a safe time to get.
Hurdles. Rope Cling OK. Doing OK so far. Jump Ring. Hill. A bit ahead of the split. Final Ladder. 49"91! He's the new number two! Casey gets bumped down a spot.
Next is Takami Toshiharu 高見俊治. He's 16. So far so good. He's ahead of the split. But he must have gotten tired because he finishes at 51"89. Casey moves down again.
Next up! He's a firefighter! Is firefighting the best suited job for SASUKE? So far he's do...NO! Course out! He got to the uneven poles but couldn't stay on track.
Someone doesn't make it. Someone doesn't quite make it to bump off number 8.
Kubota Takayuki 久保田崇之. He failed at the Cliff Hanger at the last Trial. Revenge! By the way, I'm not picking on Casey. He's just the easiest to remember.
Asa's time is 48"67. Kubota is a bit behind the split so far. About two seconds. But he picks up the pace. Final Ladder. 50"26! New number 3. The older high school teacher gets bumped.
Didn't catch the next guys name. Wait, 東雅彦. Azuma Masahiko? 54"56! Yet another older guy gets bumped. Aoki is nervous!
Yamanaka farmer guy is up next! He's a buff fifty year old. The family that trains together..trains together. Yep.
The older competitors have not fared so well during this part of the Trial. Katsuo? Tatsuo? I'll check later. OK. Kazuo. 山中和男. Here he goes. Hurdles. Rope Cling. He's doing OK so far. Wait. Problem with the rope. No! Koko de ochita! He couldn't reach the platform.
Aoki is safe for now. Next guy is Sakuma. No! He missed the Rope Cling!
The host Ishibashi Yuki 石橋祐記 misses the Jump Ring. Aoki is quite nervous.
Yamazaki Daisuke 山崎大輔 is up next! He needs at least a minute three seconds. He's a bit behind the split but is on track to get under a minute.
Stamina wa dou da? 51"77! Oh my god! Aoki is out. Casey is now 8th.
Murakami 村上 is a hairdresser! His someone is there! Mom? Wife? Hudles. Rope Cling. Doing well. He's at about the right time. Poles. Power Hanger. Final Ladder. Uh oh. 49"59! Ouch. He's the new second. Murakami has a first name but for now we'll leave it at Murakami.

SASUKE MANIAC August 3, 2008 Sort of liveblog サスケマニア
This week!
Mr. SASUKE's Assassin! The debut of a top university athlete! The son of a famous overseas talent! The continuation of the SASUKE Trial (SASUKEトライアル)! It's SASUKE Maniac (サスケマニア)!
Last week was the beginning of this year's SASUKE Trial. We saw four heats with four contestants each and so far seven people have made it to the next (final?) stage.
Here we go!
We start with a recap of last week. We see more letters! Look at that line! Hey! American shorts guy is there again.
Makoto Yahagi is there again. Akira something something from two weeks ago. Mr. SASUKE and his "assassin."
Here we go! No intros. One guy is from Fukushima (Saito). One is from Hiroshima. One is from. Oops. No one matters except the guy from Toyama, Azuma.
Don't forget the five areas: Shuttle Run (シャトルラン), Destiny Rope (ディスティニーロープ), Jump Ring (ジャンプリング), Sandbag Lift (サンドバックリフト) and 心臓破りの坂 (Shinzou Yaburi no Saka - literally the Heart Break Hill).
The bags are 30 kilos each and the slope is 45 degrees.
Next up is Andrew Gilbert..wait. HIS FATHER is the overseas talent? Who? Oh. The father isn't competing. Daijobu desu. Wow, they speak Japanese fairly well.
Andrew Gilbert. Action man Sawamura Kyosuke 澤村恭輔. Haiyuu Kobayashi Hirotsugu 小林広嗣. Yamazaki Daisuke 山崎大輔 is the fourth.
Here they go! Shuttle Run. Andrew is the first out! Kobayashi is in the lead. This is the first time it comes down to the incline. Kobayashi! Slips! But he gets back up! But only after Yamazaki.
Whoa. Andrew is 22. He looks a bit younger than that.
Makoto Yahagi 矢作誠, if you remember is the guy who was at both BUG IN MIKI and the Maguro Festival. He's apparently sent in several applications over the years. Revenge! It's on a not in his bedroom.
They talk to his mother.
Remember a clip doesn't equal a qualifier.
Next group shake hands. Four teachers! The first is from Shiba. Sasayama Tomohiro 篠山智宏 is next. Nosei Eigou . Katsuyoshi is the last.
Here they go! Destiny Rope. No one out yet. Jump Ring. Katsuyshi (I think that's wrong) and the older guy are through! I'm whiffing on the names tonight.
Next up. An American football player.
Oh hey there digest. The American football player Fujimoto Masashi 藤本将司 is through with no problem.
Clip of some guy and his wife. Next four. I'll have to go back and add in the names later. OK. Maybe. Ogami Teruyuki 大神輝幸 is a chiropractor. 伊里恒一 (Something Koichi), 小出 (Koide) something and the clip guy whose name is quite hard to figure out.
Shuttle Run. Destiny Rope. No one out yet. Jump Ring. Hayai! Ogami and the clip guy are through! We didn't get to see the others fall.
Next four. OH BOY. HE HAS SPRAY! Mr. SASUKE's protege. No pressure buddy! Miyagi Takuya 宮城拓也 is his name. They show him at Mr. SASUKE's home as he prepares him for the Trial. No explanation as to their relationship yet. Hey Yamada, your obstacles are out-dated. Miyagi works for a delivery company. They talk about pressure.
The next four: HAHA. Show that clip of Yamada crying TBS. Miyagi. All the guys have connections to the All-Stars. Takeda, Shiratori and Yamamoto's boys are next. Let's see who will make it. Miyagi is in the lead. Jump Ring. Miyagi is through. Miyagi and Yamamoto's boy are the two left standing! Sure, Yamada will probably try to rub this into the others faces later if his boy makes it. Oop. Takeda's boy got injured during the Destiny Rope.
Next is Yahagi's group. He works at the post office. Lift them bags! He doesn't use a chair at work. Words of support from his co-workers. His female co-worker has never seen his body so he doffs his shirt to show them.
Remember, there is still the final stage to go so even if he gets through here he still hasn't made it to the big show.

The other regulars are suitably shocked by Yahagi's failure.

Anyway, the SASUKE Park All-Stars (サスケパークオールスターズ) are a group of guys who have all completed SASUKE Park in the past. Some have competed on SASUKE and VIKING. Urushihara Yuji (漆原裕治) is part of the group. I guess they are not guaranteed spots on the main show. Perhaps they function like a farm team that the producers grab people from time to time.

Makoto Yahagi 矢作誠, if you remember is the guy who was at both BUG IN MIKI and the Maguro Festival. He's apparently sent in several applications over the years. Revenge! It's on a not in his bedroom.

Next group shake hands. Four teachers! The first is from Shiba. Sasayama Tomohiro 篠山智宏 is next. Nosei Eigou . Katsuyoshi is the last.

Next four. OH BOY. HE HAS SPRAY! Mr. SASUKE's protege. No pressure buddy! Miyagi Takuya 宮城拓也 is his name. They show him at Mr. SASUKE's home as he prepares him for the Trial. No explanation as to their relationship yet. Hey Yamada, your obstacles are out-dated. Miyagi works for a delivery company. They talk about pressure.
The next four: HAHA. Show that clip of Yamada crying TBS. Miyagi. All the guys have connections to the All-Stars. Takeda, Shiratori and Yamamoto's boys are next. Let's see who will make it. Miyagi is in the lead. Jump Ring. Miyagi is through. Miyagi and Yamamoto's boy are the two left standing! Sure, Yamada will probably try to rub this into the others faces later if his boy makes it. Oop. Takeda's boy got injured during the Destiny Rope.
Next is Yahagi's group. He works at the post office. Lift them bags! He doesn't use a chair at work. Words of support from his co-workers. His female co-worker has never seen his body so he doffs his shirt to show them.
Remember, there is still the final stage to go so even if he gets through here he still hasn't made it to the big show.

Anyway, the SASUKE Park All-Stars (サスケパークオールスターズ) are a group of guys who have all completed SASUKE Park in the past. Some have competed on SASUKE and VIKING. Urushihara Yuji (漆原裕治) is part of the group. I guess they are not guaranteed spots on the main show. Perhaps they function like a farm team that the producers grab people from time to time.

This week! SASUKE Trial! 80 out of a 1000! Who will make it to the big show? Who will be forced to stay at home? It's SASUKE Maniac!

There's a Rice Bowl participant!
Casey Cummings ケーシー・カミングス? He's from America. Or at least he has American flag shorts. Further examination shows that he came to Japan from Hawaii. Some other foreigners! A gaijin kid with a REALLY low voice. I believe the other gaijin are a father and son team. The father is Kent Gilbert ケント・ギルバート. The son with the low voice is Andrew Gilbert アンドリュー・ギルバート. They are from California.
Mr. SASUKE is there! He brought someone? That guy is sooo not going to make it.
Oy, I hope Rambling Rican gets photos of the American dude. He's at the corner of the screen while the announcers are talking and well, he's only wearing the flag shorts. Yeah.
Survival Station! They will be put into groups of four. The winners move on to the Final Stage.
Tons of people have sent in letters of appeal! Not all are there!

Okay, the Jump Ring is where you have to bounce off a trampoline and reach a ring to get across. The rope across the water is called the Destiny Rope.
Next four! No names announced! Asa Kazuma is one of them! He's a..delivery man? Something like that. He has SASUKE pants! Makenai! He's the only one who gets airtime so he'll probably make it.
Tanaka, Tamori, Asa and some dude whose name I didn't catch are the next four. Asa has some writing on his back.
First part is a shuttle run. Asa is the top so far. Tanaka has wiped out! Asa is up! Yes! Asa Kazuma and the other guy are the two from this heat! It was a high level battle!

Two kids named Takami, Satou something and Kato are their names.

SASUKE MANIAC July 21, 2008 Sort of liveblog サスケマニア

What's been going on? Well since the last time (the female comedy duo race) there's been a trampoline competition. Geinojin Sportsman No. 1 Wakky and others have been doing this thing where they have to use a trampoline to jump over a bar - like a high jump of sorts but using a trampoline so the bar goes higher.
Right now! Random Muscle Musical members are challenging each other as Daisuke Nakata and Naoki Iketani look on!
Some people fail! Some people pass! Yoshikawa (?) passes 2m 60cm.
Naoki Iketani! Tondeiku! 2m 60cm is no problem for Iketani! I believe Iketani and co. are going to try to break Wakky's record (whatever it is.)
Daisuke Nakata! He's up! And he grazes the bar but it doesn't go down! It doesn't go down!
Morikami Daisuke! This is his second attempt. YES! No problem! Great form!
The Muscle Musical members are all wearing different shirts like they're some living ad for the Muscle Musical Cafe Press shop or something.
Seto something! I believe he was at SASUKE 20. Here he goes! NO!
Let's look at the different people left! One assumes that since Nakata is a pro trampoline player he has an advantage.

Yoshikawa Yasuaki (吉川泰昭) is a 2006 World Champion Silver medal gymnastics wheel (gym wheel, German wheel, Rhönrad) winner!
Morikami Daisuke 守上大輔 is a mountain bike rider! See him do his thing here.
Nakata Daisuke 中田大輔 is a pro trampoline player.
Iketani Naoki 池谷直樹 is a former gymnast and frequent competitor on all things Monster 9 related.
2m 70cm! Chotto takai!
Morikami up first! No! His knees catch the bar.
Yoshikawa Yoshiaki is up next! Here he goes. Ikkai me! He does it! We've got a legit challenger to the two Monster 9 veterans.
I hope that one day the female Muscle Musical members get a chance to do this rather than just cheer with pom-poms in the back.
Iketani! He's serious! This ain't no Monster Box son! He's up and does it! Nakata, being the apparently nice guy that he is, is all smiles as Iketani passes.
Looks like everything from now on is the new record.

Here he goes! NO! Shippai! He caught the bar with his chest on his way up.
Iketani has pressure on him as the veteran. He also hasn't missed yet. Can he put pressure on Yoshikawa.

They both have only one chance left! Who will be the champion! Yoshikawa is up first. Iketani can't watch.
NO! He tried to put his arms together (everyone else does it with arms spread eagle) but it didn't help!
Iketani focuses! He doesn't have his pit powder. Will it make a difference? He gets set...

By the way, no word on if there is a body similar to the World Monster Box Association Alliance of the Universe for this new event to certify that they are indeed setting a new record.

Aoki Akira! He's a single father! He didn't make it at the last SASUKE Trial! But he's been training! He's a construction worker. I wonder if he nicks stuff from work so that he can build obstacles at home:

Wait, that Kirin Lemon commercial is hilarious! He has tan lines like the machine he uses to build his arm strength!
Ah, it's hard to explain right now.

Other Construction Worker: Hey Akira! Where are you going with that pipe?

Oh wait, we're back. Wait. Is he break dancing? AH. He uses it to develop his rhythm and balance.

Other Construction Worker: Hey Akira! Where are you going with that pipe?
Akira: Oh. Um.
Other Construction Worker: You're not stealing stuff to make SASUKE obstacles at home again are you?
Akira: What? Nonononono. I'm um. I'm taking this home to keep it safe.
Other Construction Worker: Keep it safe?
Akira: Yeah. Yeah. YEAH. KEEP IT SAFE. That's it! The boss said that this was a really important pipe so I have to take it home to make sure nothing happens to it.
Other Construction Worker: Oh. OK.
Akira: (to himself) My Pipe Slider will finally be complete!

SASUKE MANIAC June 2, 2008 Sort of liveblog! サスケマニア
This week! Momomi Yoshino has taken her wreath home (she looks really content in those pictures) and the Muscle Queen competition is over! What will SASUKE Maniac throw at us now?
Well, back on May 18th, there was the BUG IN MIKI event (note: it should always be in capital letters like that. Like saying SASUKE. Or Paul ANTHONY Terek. And how random does that sound? BUG IN MIKI! I'm going to start using that in my every day conversations. I'll use it like an interjection.
"Want to go see Iron Man?"
"Iron Man? BUG IN MIKI! That sounds good!"
"Garnett goes up for the dunk!"
"BUG IN MIKI! That was awesome!"
Note: I have not seen Iron Man yet. It's not coming to Japan until September 2008. And I don't know who to root for in the NBA Finals this year.)
Oh. Anyway, BUG IN MIKI is an event held in Miki City 三木市 in Hyogo for Volkswagon lovers in Japan. This blog's favorite BUG IN MIKIn' SASUKE All-Star Mr. SASUKE has attended it before (how red does he look in this picture? Was he hitting the 400 yen beer tent earlier in the day?) but this year the All-Stars made an appearance! And Monster 9 was there! BUG IN MIKI!

Here we go. Hrm. Monster 9 spells it as BUG in MIKI. All-Stars! Everyone except Akiyama is there. And Monster 9 shows the Yamada crying clip AGAIN. Someone there truly hates him.

There is a kind of competition amongst the attendees for something. Some can and some can't. There is a Shin-Cliff Hanger but it isn't nearly as hard as the real one. Introductions. Yamada! Shiratori! Yamamoto! Nagano! Wait. Did they introduce Takeda? I have no idea.

The All-Stars are nervous!
The next guy has been to Muscle Park before and has actually been on SASUKE but wiped out on the Jumping Spider. He's doing well. They clip his run to the Soritatsu Kabe. Salmon Ladder is no problem. Shin-Cliff Hanger...NO! Oshi!
Next guy! Urushihara Yuuji 漆原裕治! He's from Tokyo. Yamamoto says something about the guy that I didn't catch. Doing well so far. Devil Steps. OK! Salmon Ladder. Yes! Shin-Cliff Hanger! YES! He does it! The crowd oohs and aahs! He's the first clear! Mr. SASUKE shakes his hand while the guy is bowing to him Mr. SASUKE walks away! Dick. He finished in 51.54.
Everyone is trying to show-up the All-Stars! Next guy is blitzing the course! Shin-Cliff Hanger...He reaches...YES! He finishes in 51.80. Mottainai!

They speak to his mom and the producer confirms what I thought: that Urushihara Yuji (漆原裕治) is someone we'll have to keep an eye out for the next SASUKE. Yatta! Remember that name!

Well, back on May 18th, there was the BUG IN MIKI event (note: it should always be in capital letters like that. Like saying SASUKE. Or Paul ANTHONY Terek. And how random does that sound? BUG IN MIKI! I'm going to start using that in my every day conversations. I'll use it like an interjection.
"Want to go see Iron Man?"
"Iron Man? BUG IN MIKI! That sounds good!"
"Garnett goes up for the dunk!"
"BUG IN MIKI! That was awesome!"
Note: I have not seen Iron Man yet. It's not coming to Japan until September 2008. And I don't know who to root for in the NBA Finals this year.)
Oh. Anyway, BUG IN MIKI is an event held in Miki City 三木市 in Hyogo for Volkswagon lovers in Japan. This blog's favorite BUG IN MIKIn' SASUKE All-Star Mr. SASUKE has attended it before (how red does he look in this picture? Was he hitting the 400 yen beer tent earlier in the day?) but this year the All-Stars made an appearance! And Monster 9 was there! BUG IN MIKI!

Here we go. Hrm. Monster 9 spells it as BUG in MIKI. All-Stars! Everyone except Akiyama is there. And Monster 9 shows the Yamada crying clip AGAIN. Someone there truly hates him.
Quick recap of why the All-Stars are the All-Stars. Bunpei! Takeda! Nagano! Look, there's the clip of Takeda looking up a young girl's skirt again.
Hahaha, look at Yamamoto goofing around while Yamada tries to explain the course. Did he design it?
There is a kind of competition amongst the attendees for something. Some can and some can't. There is a Shin-Cliff Hanger but it isn't nearly as hard as the real one. Introductions. Yamada! Shiratori! Yamamoto! Nagano! Wait. Did they introduce Takeda? I have no idea.
First guy is from Saitama. WAIT. THAT'S THE SAME GUY FROM THE MAGURO FESTIVAL (Yahagi Makoto 矢作誠 for the curious). Geez, he's persistent. He's done the SASUKE Trial. He's gone to Muscle Park. They show his Maguro Festival run again. Pipe Slider first. Lamp Grasper. A version of the Soritatsu Kabe. Devil Steps. He's doing well so far. Oops. I just realized I forgot to start recording this. Salmon Ladder. Shin-Cliff Hanger. Can he do it? NO! He just missed. Mottainai!
Six try. Six fail! Either on the Shin-Cliff Hanger or the Salmon Ladder.

The next guy has been to Muscle Park before and has actually been on SASUKE but wiped out on the Jumping Spider. He's doing well. They clip his run to the Soritatsu Kabe. Salmon Ladder is no problem. Shin-Cliff Hanger...NO! Oshi!
Next guy! Urushihara Yuuji 漆原裕治! He's from Tokyo. Yamamoto says something about the guy that I didn't catch. Doing well so far. Devil Steps. OK! Salmon Ladder. Yes! Shin-Cliff Hanger! YES! He does it! The crowd oohs and aahs! He's the first clear! Mr. SASUKE shakes his hand while the guy is bowing to him Mr. SASUKE walks away! Dick. He finished in 51.54.

This week! No more Maguro Festival! It'll be like Motley Crue said, "Girls, girls, girls!" Except not! Someone send me a copy of "The Dirt!"
While we're waiting let's see what's happening in the world of Japanese sports! Baseball highlights set to a cover version of Beat It! Kotooooooooooooshu! He won. Women's volleyball! They lost. Soyjoy! Everyone wins!
I hope that monster eats Kimura one day.
Jero! He's already sold out to the man!
Finally! Muscle Queen 2008! Tonight! The final stage!
1st Stage: Yurisa. 2nd Stage: Kayo Noro.
Last week Cherry Pie EXPLODED as one of them took out the other one.
Next up: Yurisa ユリサ vs. Inui Mayu 乾麻由! They are taking each other on that weird balance thing in Muscle Park (バランス). Yurisa's time was 3.03 seconds. Inui's second try! Here she goes! 2.49 seconds! Yurisa wins!
Kayo Noro 野呂佳代 vs. Nishiaki Aina 西秋愛菜 in the Body Clock (ボディクロック)! They have to press the button and try to be the closest to 10 seconds. Noro's time...9.81 seconds! Nishiaki...11.28! Noro wins! Nishiaki is out!
Momomi Yoshino 吉野ももみ vs. Miho of Cherry Pie! チェリー☆パイ みほ Whoever wins here will go on to the Final Stage! They have to touch the pads in order (アジリティ). Yoshino is first! Her time is 14.28. Miho is next! Can she do it? Here she goes! Ah! She misstepped! Will it cost her? 15.85! It did! Wait. Miho gets another chance. Here she goes! No! She missed the top button! 17.18 seconds! Yoshino is going to the Final Stage!
Flash Circle! (What?) First up is Noro vs. Yurisa! They have to touch lamps on poles (フラッシュサークル). Noro is first! AHH! No! She missed! Oh, they have to touch the lamps in order. Yurisa! She did it! Noro is out!
The next event! Workout (ワークアウト)! One minute of push ups! Not exactly the fastest of paces. Yoshino is in the early lead. One minute of sit ups! The pace picks up! It's still close! Yoshino is up by about 7. And that's the final difference! Final tally: 50- 43! Yoshino wins the third stage!
Yurisa is still in the lead with 20 points. Noro is next with 18 and Yoshino is last at 16. Yurisa is still hurting from the Workout!
Now they are in Dex Hiroba! Wherever that is. Yoshino finished 3rd, 3rd, 1st. Noro was 2nd, 1st, 3rd. Yurisa was 1st, 2nd, 2nd.
The last event! 空気椅子 Kuuki Isu! I forget what we call it in English. Chairs? They have do that thing where you have to hold yourself up in a sitting position with your back against the wall. Because of the point totals, Yurisa gets an extrat 40 seconds, Noro an extra 20 seconds. So Yoshino has to start, then Noro, then Yurisa.

We're back! Reaching 1:30. This is thrilling! Two minutes coming up. Yurisa is looking pained. This event possibly favors Yoshino. Wait! Noro is the first out! Yurisa and Yoshino! Two and a half minutes! Remember that Yurisa started over half a minute after Yoshino. Three minutes. Yurisa looks pained! She's tilting her head forward!

SASUKE MANIAC May 18, 2008 Sort of liveblog! サスケマニア

Yamada! Nagano! Takeda! Akiyama! Someone else! You have two choices! The All-Stars go head-to-head at the Maguro Festival! Can their friendship survive? Will the maguro ever be the same? Who will be number one? Who will conquer the Maguro Festival Mock-SASUKE Obstacle Course of Doom and Destruction? It's SASUKE MANIA!
While we're waiting, let's watch JSpo and take a look at Princess Megu (プリンセス・メグ) and the rest of Yanagimoto Japan, i.e. the Japan Women's National Volleyball Team who beat Puerto Rico tonight, 25-20, 25-18, 17-25, 26-24 in their bid to play in Beijing for the 2008 Olympics.
Whoa, what's up with that new Axe commercial? (It's the limited whatever one with the puppets)

Last week we saw the first day of the Maguro Festival and the fun to be had there. This week, they promised us a competition of sorts as the All-Stars and others try to complete the short course.
More information about the Maguro Festival. HEY! That's Shingo Yamamoto! Perhaps he was busy pumping gas. Hey! Crazy marriage lady again.
Pipe Slider, Jumping Bar, Trampoline (just Trampoline), Shin-Cliff Hanger. It's some kind of special stage for today? No idea.
Some spectators try to tackle the course.
One guy (Yahagi Makoto 矢作誠) is from Tokyo. He has sent in SASUKE videos before but couldn't cut it at the last SASUKE trial. The Maguro Festival could be his chance!
Start! Pipe Slider. Cut to the Jumping Bar. No problem! Takeda and Yamamoto look on! Shin-Cliff Hanger. Swinging...swinging. NO! Was this his last chance? I guess we'll have to wait for 21 to find out.
Others are unable to clear the Shin-Cliff Hanger.
The All-Stars confer with each other. They're going to do a time trial! So they'll not only be competing against the course but against each other! All-Stars explode! They climb to the top of the course as they are introduced. Too bad Yamada didn't fall down while he was doing that.

Mr. SASUKE is next! Pipe Slider and Jumping Bar are fine. Trampoline (you jump to a bar to hold on to then go a short distance). Shin-Cliff Hanger. OY! He's the first to complete the course! 50秒91!
Takeda up now! Pipe Slider. Jumping Bar. Woo. He's going fast. HOLY CRAP. Did Mr. SASUKE do something to piss him off? Takeda finishes the short course in less than half the time of Yamada. 20秒87!
Nagano! Can he do it? Man. It was too fast to even describe. What was his time? We wait to build some tension...21秒20!

Last week! Kayo Noro 野呂佳代 defeated Yurisa ユリサ to tie them up at the top of the leader board. This week they go to Hiromichi Sato's old hangout, the Muscle Park!
Noro and Yurisa are already through so the others have to battle it out to determine the final..um..finalist.
Coordination! Momomi Yoshino 吉野ももみ and Izumi Takami 泉貴美! They have to follow the voice and touch the appropriate pad with their hands or feet. Yoshino is first! She gets 42. Izumi up now. She missed one somewhere I think. They stop tracking her score to build suspense. She has 40! Yoshino wins!
Next! Cherry Pie チェリー☆パイ explodes! I have no idea what the name of this event is. It's like Can Alley, if you know what that is. They have to throw balls into a raised basket but a cover is rotating so something. I have no idea. Kassun gets a total of 15 after two rounds. Miho only needs five to get through since she had 11 in the first round.
CMs. FYI, Kyoko Fukada has taken Kumi Koda's place as the CM face of Kirin.

Next! Cherry Pie チェリー☆パイ explodes! I have no idea what the name of this event is. It's like Can Alley, if you know what that is. They have to throw balls into a raised basket but a cover is rotating so something. I have no idea. Kassun gets a total of 15 after two rounds. Miho only needs five to get through since she had 11 in the first round.
CMs. FYI, Kyoko Fukada has taken Kumi Koda's place as the CM face of Kirin.

SASUKE MANIAC May 11, 2008 Sort of liveblog! サスケマニア
Update: Arsenette has pictures that I was too lazy to take here.
Decided to watch this one since it a) wasn't simply another re-hash of 20 and b) wasn't completely focussed on the Muscle Queen competition which I wasn't following because I didn't know who most of the people competing were.
D'oh! I missed the preview at the beginning.
We pick up at thestation airport (Kagoshima Airport to be exact) where the All-Stars~! are meeting each other. There's Akiyama and Nagano meeting Mr. Tight Shirt Mr. SASUKE. And there's Takeda. He's the youngest but he's the latest!
It's off to the Maguro Festival! Day 1! Everyone is looking forward to it. At the Maguro Festival, there is a decided focus on Maguro. Who'd have thought it? Ohh..I'd like to try try some Maguro gyoza. 400 yen! They've got a whole SASUKE set-up there.

Nagano reflects on how the event is important for SASUKE's popularity. Mr. SASUKE is nervous about something for some reason.
The reason could be that random people in the crowd grab his chest as he's walking around. Or old ladies accosting him. We see the All-Stars mingle with the common folk, signing autographs, shaking hands etc. One lady is soooo overcome with meeting Nagano that she can't help but be giddy as a schoolgirl. She says that she wants to marry Nagano and that it's like a dream because she wanted to meet him.
Takeda and Nagano receive something from two little kids. One is a picture of maguro and the other is a letter. They apparently give them to them every year. When that little boy grows up he wants to be compete on SASUKE!
This is the third year that the All-Stars are at the festival. The old obstacles were:
Lamp Grasper
Cliff Hanger
Soritatsu Kabe
A Rope Climb similar to the old Final Stage
This year they've added:
Salmon Ladder
Shin-Cliff Hanger
Spider Walk
Jumping Bars
Pipe Slider
Something that looks like the Swing Ladder.
A pole that serves as a bridge (no idea).
Plus the Lamp Grasper and Soritatsu Kabe for a total of nine obstacles.
And parts of it are over a pool of killer sharks! No wait. I think those are more maguro.
Yamada and Akiyama are a bit nervous. Takeda is all cool by saying zen zen daijoubu (no problem).
Nagano demonstrates the Lamp Grasper. Yamada does the Jumping Bar. Nagano with the Soritatsu Kabe. They talk to an old lady who is a wee bit confused as to what she is watching.
Akiyama does the old Cliff Hanger.
Kakkoi! The youth of Japan have spoken!
Some random people try out the obstacles. Nagano laughs at their failure! Laughs I tell you!
Kids try too. Slightly uncomfortable moment as Takeda (?) looks like he's catching some up-skirt of a little girl trying the Spider Walk.
After the festival the All-Stars run into some people who are apparently fans as they go out for a drink.
Hrm..Yamada and Takeda are having beer. Either Nagano and Akiyama are drinking oolong -cha or long island ice teas. I bet on the former. Squares.
They really like playing with kids! Wait. I don't think that's what they mean.
The next day the All-Stars and others will tackle the course! But that's for another episode! We've got women to show off here!
2008 Muscle Queen!
We're entering the 2nd Stage. Last week the ladies paired off in different events. This week, different pairs (I think) and different events.
1st Battle: Kayo Noro 野呂佳代 of AKB48 vs. idol Yoshino Momomi 吉野ももみ in the 50m Hurdles. Noro does dance as part of her training for AKB48. Yoshino is part of this geinojin female futsal team that competes against other idol teams. They're off! And it's Noro!
2nd Battle: comedy team Cherry Pie's Miho vs. model Yurisa in a 100m race where the point is to reach the goal as close to 30 seconds as possible. Miho is off! She's..um..clapping. To keep time? She's finished! It's Yurisa's turn! She looks serious! She dashes for the line! What is she going to do! She stops right near the line! Waits. Then crosses! Time to for their times! Yurisa's time is 26.59! Miho is 32.18! She went over! Yurisa wins!
2nd Stage Final: Noro vs. Yurisa! Again! They had faced off in an earlier event, the Eternal Jump, which sounds really cool but was actually just them jumping rope until one of them (Noro) trips up.
The event is 5 50m interval runs. Whatever that is. I guess we'll find out. They're off! I still have no idea. OK. It's like they just have to complete 5 laps of 50 m. 1. 2. 3. 4. Yurisa looks tired but at the 4th she shoots out at the start! Last race! But let's cut to a CM first.
Riverdance is back in Japan!
Last run! Revenge! Noro wins the last race! Yurisa says Yappari stamina nai!
And it's on to the 3rd Stage! They will find the top 3...at the Muscle Park! Synergy!
Next week! More Maguro Festival! More Muscle Queen! More Riverdance! Well, maybe not the last one.

The Top Ten SASUKE Moments (as chosen by SASUKE Maniac viewers)
During the run-up to SASUKE 20, SASUKE Maniac (サスケマニア) had their viewers write in their Top Ten SASUKE Moments. Here are the results.
(Taken from Japanese blog Music In Life. The following is not a translation of what they are saying but my own thoughts on each moment.)
10. Katsumi Yamada SASUKE 12, Second Stage 山田勝己 (第12回2nd)
Mr.Dumb-Ass SASUKE forgets to take off his gloves for the Chain Reaction before attempting the Spider Walk which results in a controversial DQ (no one had heard that they had to take their gloves off before that). Yamada cries. He skips the 13th SASUKE (too busy crying), comes back at the 14th but hasn't passed the First Stage since.
9. Koji Yamada, SASUKE 12, First Stage 山田康司 (第12回1st)
Yamada (Koji, not Yasushi), in his first appearance, becomes the first number 1 to clear the First Stage. He's still the only person to have accomplished that particular feat.
8. Toshihiro Takeda, SASUKE 14, First Stage 竹田敏浩 (第14回1st)
Takeda BLITZES the First Stage in 32.44 seconds. Still the First Stage record and unlikely to be broken since the present course makes such a time impossible.
7. Makoto Nagano, SASUKE 12, Final Stage 長野誠 (第12回Final)
Nagano's second straight attempt at the Final Stage and he misses by only 0.11 seconds.
6. Shunsuke Nagasaki, SASUKE 17, Third Stage 長崎峻侑 (第17回3rd)
The boy becomes a MAN. He also causes his mom to scream and look away in terror.
5. Bunpei Shiratori, SASUKE 15, 白鳥文平 (第15回)
白鳥文平がダウン Shiratori Bunpei ga down! Shiratori comes back from heat exhaustion in the First Stage to make a memorable run that unfortunately ends during the Climbing Bars in the Third Stage. Monster 9 learns that the the middle of summer is not a good time to have people running and jumping around.
4. Kane Kosugi and Jordan Jovtchev, SASUKE 8, Final Stage ケイン・コスギ, ヨルダン・ヨブチェフ (第8回FINAL)
Gaijin rule! On a rainy evening, two foreigners are the only ones left standing. Jovtchev becomes the first person to time out during the Spider Climb portion of the Final Stage. Kinniku Banzuke poster boy Kane Kosugi reaches the Final Stage only to time out during the Rope Climb. Kane's tears mix with the rain as the in-studio team looks on in stunned silence. As Kane is taken away by van little did anyone realize that as the door was being closed it was also closing Kane's SASUKE career.

Mr. SASUKE cries after failing to reach the promised land, unable to complete the final jump at the end of the Pipe Slider both times. One attempt (the 6th) actually lands but he is unable to maintain his balance and falls off the platform. His pleas to continue fall on deaf ears (he had also promised to retire at that time). Failure during the 10th prompts the clip that TBS LOVES playing where he is crying and says 俺には…、SASUKEしかないんですよ (Ore ni wa...SASUKE shikanaindesuyo) -- which basically means "For me, there is nothing else except SASUKE" (or SASUKE is everything to him). Someone at TBS must hate him a lot more than me to keep playing that clip all the time.

The first person to ever complete SASUKE. 34 people completed the First Stage in SASUKE 4, the most ever. 11 make it to the Third Stage but only one reaches the Final Stage and enters the books as the first man to complete SASUKE. And then there is a seven year wait until...

Nagano finally realizes not only his dream, but the collective dream of the SASUKE All-Stars, a group that had been created in the 5th SASUKE and had come to represent the kind of camaraderie and dedication found in all the SASUKE competitors. It was Nagano's fourth attempt at the Final Stage and was followed by an almost complete overhaul of the course, ushering in a new age of SASUKE. The show would hit American shores which would add a new element in the form of theMichael Dudikoff Memorial Competition American Ninja Challenge and a whole new set of fans.

SASUKE MANIAC April 7, 2008 Sort of liveblog! サスケマニア
I was supposed to go to bed early but eh, whatever.
Daisuke Miyazaki! The 20th was his first SASUKE ever! BUT! So many people before him failed that day! Can Daisuke ignore that and conquer SASUKE!
Daisuke and his teammates discuss tactics while watching the other competitors. Kore wa daijoubu! Terebi de zen zen chigau! White people sighting!
Let's go into his background!
He's a handball player! He's a Sportsman No. 1. Miyazaki Daisuke!
Hey! That's cheating! Daisuke and his handball buddies get a chance to practice with the trampoline for the Jumping Spider. Maketakunai!
Naoki Iketani and Daisuke talk shop! Hey! Yamamoto! And Mr. SASUKE. Yeah.
Nakagawa Handball player has to go earlier than the others.
Kazuhiko Akiyama! He failed during the Half-Pipe Attack.
Nakagawa gets busy with the SASUKE SPRAY!
Steps. Pole Maze (skipped the Log Grip). I remember this. They clipped his run. Mainly because the pole got stuck like it usually does at the beginning of the show. He retires at the Jumping Spider.
SWAT Guy!
The day goes on. Some people fail!
Izuma handball player! Not as much problem with Pole Maze. He almost slipped during the Jumping Spider but was able to adjust. Half-Pipe Attack! He overshoots! So a misjump on the Jumping Spider is survivable if you can get your legs set.
Let us relive Shingo Yamamoto's miss on the Half-Pipe Attack. It makes the others a bit more nervous.
Daisuke is warming up! But there are still 18 more people to go before him! Better early than late is how Daisuke thinks.
Let's see Iketani's scrawnier than usual body fail the Spider Walk portion of the Jumping Spider.
Shinji Kobayashi goes looking for trash under the Jumping Spider.
The other handballers get a big kick out of their teammate failing the Log Grip.
Not-Olympian Okuyama! And Levi (google hits) Meeuwenberg! They finished! Everyone else did not!
Oh good. We get to relive Kongo's goofy looking fail on the Flying Shoot.
Takeda, Jordan Jochtev, Takamasa Nagasaki and Yuuji Washimi all fail. Just not in that order.

Half-Pipe Attack! Miyazakiiiiii!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He was on then he was off. It happened quite often that day. More people passed the Jumping Spider only to somehow misjudge something about how to land, mostly ending up on the end of the platform, lose their balance then fall off.

Oh. Daisuke makes a sort of prediction! His handball number is 21 so the 21st SASUKE will be THE ONE.
His handball teammates want to try again!
